Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath is hands down one of the best books I’ve ever read in terms of finding yourself and helping you excel in your career.
I’ve seen this book many times in my life but I never saw how important it truly was. I finally bought the book and went through it. To my surprise, most of the content is short in the beginning, the rest of the book details all the of key strengths which you can reference later.
The way Strengths Finder 2.0 works is that Tom Path did extensive study into the success of people. He found that people who used their god given strengths had higher chances to succeed rather than people who spent years trying to develop their weaknesses.
The main disadvantage of trying to improve upon your weaknesses is that you’ll just waste years of your life. You’ll expend precious time on something that’s not worthy of achieving.
Tom Rath recommends for you to use your strengths for it will take you to the top.
For example, let’s say that one day one of your kids came home and showed you his grades. He had an A, B, C and a F. Which grade would you focus on? Most parents would focus on grade F and encourage them to improve those grades. However Tom Rath says this method of thinking is wrong for the strengths we have are the ones we should be focusing on.
If you’re not good at numbers but excellent with people, why work in accounting? You’ll just be miserable, under a lot of stress and living a dispassionate life. However if you’re working in HR where you’re great with people, you’ll excel in your career for that’s your strengths and it’s what you’re naturally good at. As a result, you’ll get promoted and rise up the corporate ladder, saving you a ton of time.
The book also helps you uncover 5 of your key strengths. At the back of the book, there is a code, whereby you log onto the Strengths Finder website and you enter it in.
You’ll be taken to a 45 minute test where there will be multiple choice questions. These questions will vary but eventually evolve into what you’re naturally good at.
For example, when I started the test, it asked a lot of generic questions, however when a pattern emerged, it changed the quality of the questions and went deeper into my strengths.
With each question, you have 30 seconds to answer it. This is great because normally your initial instincts are accurate so you’ll tend to choose the right one.
My Results from Strengths Finder 2.0
Last year when I picked up this book and discovered my strengths, I started using it in my life. One of my strengths is Focus. I didn’t realise this was a strength for I always tend to get distracted with social media whenever I’m working. However I realised that there were times in my life when I was utterly focused and I was able to achieve big things only when I’m focused.
So then I decided to take my strengths for a spin and see where it takes me. As a result, I was able to accomplish so much more. For example, in 30 days I was able to focus on writing 3 short books. A month later, I wrote over 120 articles (2 months) and film 35 videos for my youtube channel. All from my strength of focus.
So as a result, I can definitely say that by using your strengths, it works. I’ve also purchased this book for my friend and she went through it as well. She discovered her strengths and now I’ve noticed she’s being more active in spreading awareness in sending positive vibes to the world (her strengths is positivity). Now she’s got a youtube channel producing great videos and sharing her talents to the world.
