How To Be More Productive At Home So You Can Get More Stuff Done

As more and more people go online these days, the opportunities arise where people can begin working from home. Many companies these days have the facility to enable their staff to work from home. There is software that can enable you to remote connect to computers at the office while you can call anyone on Skype anywhere in the world. You can still fully do the same work as you would at the office but at home in your pjs.

Working from home is the ultimate lifestyle and if you accomplish it, you’re living the dream most would envy. However one of the biggest drawbacks is that despite how comfortable it is working from home, the biggest problem is distraction. You may kid yourself and say that you’ll be super productive at home because you’re more comfortable however it’s not that easy.

As soon as you roll out of the bed, you head to the kitchen and pour yourself a cup of coffee. You go back to your home office and begin to check emails. You head back to the kitchen to get your coffee and then go back to your home office and do some work.

Then all of a sudden, your pet cat jumps on your lap, you play with the cat and then it spills your coffee everywhere. So you of course have to get a towel and clean it up and also mop the floor. You then go to the laundry room and get the mop and bucket, bring it back to your office and start cleaning it up.

When you’re done, you decide to take a mini break so you head back to the kitchen to make yourself a sandwich. You make your sandwich and decide to eat it while watching some TV.

“I’ll get back to it right after I finish eating and watching this.”

A few hours past and you log back into your computer to catch up on some work. Before you know it, it’s lunch time again and then you head to the shops to quickly grab some lunch. You then decide to quickly do some errands since you’re already out of the house so then you stop by other shops and buy other things.

Mean while you’re checking your email on your phone and feel like you’re working.

It’s afternoon now and you’re back at home, doing some work and then you’re hungry again.

Before you know it, it’s already 5pm and you say to yourself “What a tiring day!”

Little did you know, you only did a few productive hours at home but of course, this is the dream and wouldn’t live any other way.

It’s extremely difficult to run a successful business or career from home. There’s just so many distractions, temptations and things that’s pulling you away from working solid for the 8 hours you’re supposed to be working.

I’ve worked from home for many years and there is not one solid week where I’m clocking in 40 solid hours like I do in my corporate job. Even though yes I do work harder and even longer hours past 10pm, I do take lots of long breaks and do things that distract me from working on the tough tasks.

I’m only human.

The problem with working from home is that there is no boundary and set routine. Your comfortable bedroom acts as your mini home office, you have no boss telling you what to do so you can do whatever you want.

It’s human nature and you simply can’t enforce the same strictness as you would at the office. Otherwise, why else would you want to work from home? So you can be more productive? Let’s keep it real.

However even though working from home can still be beneficial to your work and wellbeing, below are some great productivity hacks that will enable you to produce more while you’re more comfortable working from home.

Turn off all distractions.

The biggest killer towards your productivity is distractions. You have Facebook, twitter, instagram, the internet, cat videos and more. All these distractions are killing your productivity and you know what they say about distractions? It takes you 20 minutes to get back to what you were doing when you’ve been distracted.

Have set schedules and stick with it. 

In order to maintain consistency and productivity, you need to have a set schedule just like as you would at work. Wake up at 7am, be at your desk by 8am and start working until noon. Pretend your boss is still watching you but you know he/she isn’t so you have to enforce tons of discipline to achieve this.

Make sure that you have clearly defined schedules so you can smash out a ton of work at home.

Have clear boundaries. 

Don’t mix pleasure with work. If you can, try not to work in the bedroom where it’s a place of rest and happy times. Try to have a separate place where you can focus on work. Tell your loved ones that you’ll be working there and need to focus on your work. It’s really hard to work from home if your schedule and work time is blurry. It will just blend into leisure.

Working from home can be one of the most rewarding things you can ever do in your life. Personally I think that if you can sustain the work from home lifestyle, you’ll quickly realise that even though more money is often appreciated, the rewards from working from home far outweigh just making more money in the corporate jungle. Just remember to stay productive.
