Some of the most successful people in the world declare one thing that has contributed most to their success.
It’s the one word : Passion.
Why is passion so important to become successful? The reason is because passion is what drives person to take action despite adversity. Passion is what give people the courage to pursue their dreams and break past all obstacles that come in their way.
Steve Job’s once did an interview where he said one of the secrets of success is to be passionate in what you’re doing. The reason is because if you’re not passionate in whatever it is you’re doing, you’ll just give up, because you’re sane. No one wants to do something they don’t enjoy and if any slight obstacle occurs, they will just pull the plug because it’s not worth fighting for.
The Importance of Passion
Passion is so important when building your business because obstacles will always come your way and you’ll be tested on how much you really want your dream. A person who is passionate in writing will always find ways to write. Despite being busy at work, interruptions, distractions, a passionate writer will still write in his/her free time no matter what time it is.
However someone who is not passionate in writing, will probably try writing a few sentences and give up and do something else. There’s nothing wrong with that because it’s simply not that person’s interest and strength.
Therefore it’s extremely important to find out what you’re truly passionate about and once you find it, go all in.
My Personal Experience In Finding Out What I Was Passionate About
This concept of finding your passion and going all in took me a few years to figure out. I heard this concept before but it never really triggered in my mind until just recently. Over the years, I’ve tried many things such as writing, public speaking, creating websites, designing graphics, search engine optimisation and a ton more.
Out of all of those things, the one thing that has really stood out throughout the past 10-15 years is writing. I’ve figured out that I’m just a natural writer and I really enjoy doing it. To me, it’s just a walk in the park to write down my thoughts and ideas and articulate them across. However I hear so many other people who say that they struggle with writing and to me, that sounds really absurd because it’s so easy for me.
Then I realise that it’s simply my strength and my passion. It’s my gift that I have to hone and craft for the many years to come. From my observation, there’s been a lot of signs that writing is the path in which I must follow. I’ve been complimented in the past on my writing, I’ve published books, written hundreds of articles, journals and even remember writing my first journal and my high school teacher said my writing is extremely interesting in front of the entire class.
It took me a very long time to figure this out but when I started applying my skills in writing and in the areas of subjects that I’m passionate about, I noticed I got a lot of positive results from it. For example, a previous website that was launched was secrets entrepreneur and I wrote hundreds of articles on entrepreneurship. It was from that website I was able to generate passive income, get speaking opportunities and more. I got so many opportunities from that one blog site, it was incredible. I made it successful because I used my gift in writing and also wrote topics I was truly passionate about, not just to rank high in the search engines.
However I got sidetracked and did other things that came my way, which I eventually lost that site and all the opportunities that came with it. I believe that in my hearts of hearts, we are given a talent / gift and we are to use that gift and work at it over the years. Those gifts that we are given is what will take us to the top. If we squander those gifts, we will be punished.
Outwitting the Devil by Napolean Hill
There was a very interesting and controversial book called “Outwitting the Devil” by Napolean Hill, the same author who wrote Think and Grow Rich. In that book “Outwitting the Devil” there was a strange scene where he said he spoke with the devil and the devil said to him that people who are drifting or wasting their lives without using their talents get’s punished. It could be a string of bad luck or some adversity. Whatever it is, you will get punished if you don’t make use of your gifts. It’s the ultimate trick of the Devil to distract you from knowing what you’re truly gifted at.
I’ve always remembered this because the time when I was really working on my strengths which was writing, I was getting a ton of positive results but when I ignored it and went off to do something else, I lost everything. That was my punishment.
So the first step is to do whatever you can to find out what you’re truly passionate about and what your strengths are. One you find out what your strengths are, use it and work on it for the rest of your life because it’s a gift you give to the world.
Here are some of the things you can do to help find your passion and strengths.
Whether you believe it or not, understanding astrology will help you find out what you’re naturally good at. If you’re a scorpio like me, you’re attracted to the mysteries of life and a natural born investigator where you find out the truth. Of course, you don’t have to take it literally but understand astrology helps you understand the overall picture of someone and yourself.
There is a great test that you can take that will help you understand what your personality type is, it’s called 16 Personalities and it’s a combination of various psychologist who classifies people within a certain category. For example the ENFJ type which stands for Extraverted, Introverted, Feelings and Judgemental types are usually leaders and protagonists in the world. They care about people and motivate them to achieve what they want in their lives. They are the ultimate leader in encouraging you to go for it.
Strengths Finder 2.0
This book would be the first thing you do to find out what you’re truly good at. The book Strengths Finder 2.0 was written by Tom Rath and it helps you find out what your top 5 strengths are. The concept of the book is outstanding where Tom Rath talks about how people use their strengths to bring them to the top. Don’t waste years of your life trying to fix your weaknesses when you have your powerful strengths sitting right there that will take you forward.
In the asian arena, understanding Chinese Horoscopes also help you find out what you’re good at. There’s various Chinese signs such as the rooster, ox, snake etc and they all have their unique personality traits. It’s worthwhile learning about this and knowing what your strengths are in Chinese Astrology.
This will take you a while but it’s worth it. Try as many things as possible, if you see something interesting and worth pursuing, try it out and see how you go. By trying as many experiences as possible, you know what you’re good at and what you don’t like. Once you reach a point where you’ve gone after nearly everything you’ve dreamed about, you build self confidence in yourself which is very powerful character trait to have. Have an open mind and try as many experiences as you can. Don’t be afraid of failing, life is short so get out there and try.
Once you’ve gone out there and tried many things, take some time every weekend, preferably on Sundays, to reflect on the past week, months and years. It’s during those times of reflection, you’ll see the lessons life has taught you and you’ll be able to “connect the dots” as Steve Jobs elegantly put it. Spend some time reflecting on what something worked and why something didn’t work and you’ll uncover massive wisdom from this.
Keep reading and working on your inner game
Finally, keep reading the books, researching, picking up as much information to understand yourself more. If there’s a new way of finding out what you’re good at, try it out. If there’s a book that talks about the study of passion, read it. Keep picking up this valuable information and build up your inner game. Never stop learning and keep building up your inner game, it’s worth it because over the years, you’ll become a totally different person compared to what you used to be.
Tony Robbins once said that happiness is not what you achieve, it’s who you become that makes you happy.
Learn more about yourself and become the best person you ought to be. Use your strengths and live life with passion.
Stay Strong and Be Relentless.
