Although I still haven’t finished reading Seneca’s book “On the Shortness of Life”, I’m still amazed with what he said in the first chapter of the book.
Seneca said a few things that really opened my mind about how people use their time. People tend to be preoccupied with many things and at the end of their lives, they look back and realised that they should of used their time more wisely towards what they really wanted to do.
One of the most common complaints is that life is short. However it is long enough only if you use it wisely. Someone also said that you don’t beat the reaper by living longer, you beat the reaper by living well. The reaper will come for you and never discriminates against anyone, young or old.
Probably the biggest thing I learned from chapter one in Seneca’s book is preoccupation. If you think about it, the choices we make is like a rabbit hole. If we choose to go and hang out with friends, then we are preoccupied with travelling, organising, spending time with them, drinking, recovering and more. If we work in a job, we are preoccupied with focusing on getting things done there, the work involved, the stress, the health and more. If we start a business, we are preoccupied for years trying to grow that business, look after clients, create products and more.
Everywhere we go, requires time for it to develop and we must be mindful of the choices we make.
Seneca also said something truly profound. He said that we all seem to guard our money but we never guard our time. We gladly give it away. Money can be made back but time can not.
Already, I started minimising and cutting things out from my life. I’ve unsubscribed from over 3,000 people on Facebook. I’ve unsubscribed from email newsletters, notifications, deleted apps and trimmed the fat from my life.
All it takes i just one alert popup and then I’ve lost an hour of my time.
If there was one thing I would leave with you its this. Don’t waste time. Watch out for the choices you make for they will require time. Choice where you invest your time.
Stay Strong and Be Relentless.
