Brian Tracy did one of the most powerful speeches titled “Success Is A Journey”. He talks about how he started off in his early adult life travelling the world, one of which is crossing the Sahara desert. He learnt a great deal from that experience where he nearly died of dehydration. Most people who try to cross the Sahara desert are never seen again but Brian Tracy was one of the few who made it.
This speech is one of my favourites for you can really learn a lot from Brian’s experience. He ties in the lessons he learnt whilst preparing, crossing and making it past the Sahara desert. Lessons such as ignoring the naysayers, the devil is in the details, you will get there one oil barrel at a time and more.
I highly recommend for you to watch his video.
Here are Brian Tracy’s 7 Rules To Success from his speech “Success is a Journey”
1. Take Action.
No matter what you do in life, you must always take action. You can never achieve any sort of success without taking any action. Action drives results and whether they are positive or negative, it’s still a result. Take more action in your life and you will generate the results you need to either push forward or adjust your course.
2. Always Forward Never Backward.
A decision you will always make is whether you will persist in the face of adversity or not. When faced with adversity, you can either retreat or attack. Adversity reveals one’s true character.
3. The only time you have is NOW.
If you think about it, all you have is now. There is no present, there is no future, there is the now and that’s all there is. The future hasn’t happened yet and the past is gone. Therefore the only thing you have to work with is the now. The rest will take care of itself. Just take it one step at a time and eventually the future will unravel itself.
4. Fly with the eagles.
This one is a big one. They say that who you associate with is one of the most critical success factors there is. If you associate with 4 broke people, you will be the 5th. If you associate with 4 losers, you will be the 5th. Associate with the winners and they will make you a winner. You also need to watch out for the ones who tear you down and criticise what you do. They will pour poison into your mind and undermine your progress. Watch out for the naysayers and dream killers.
5. Obstacles and difficulties come not to obstruct, but to instruct.
Brian Tracy talks about running out of money over and over again prior to his Sahara crossing. He realised that by looking back, prior to all victories where tons of difficulty before it. There would always be a mountain of problems in front of the thing you are striving for. Therefore all the difficulties you are having in your life are simply teachers teaching you a valuable lesson. All the problems you are having are a stepping stone into the dreams you want.
6. Be clear on your goals. Keep your mind open.
You need to be absolutely crystal clear on your goals. If you were to cut down a tree and you had 6 hours, you would spend 4 hours sharpening the axe. Find out what you really want wiht absolute clarity and that’s half of the battle. There is no point striving for something and achieving what you didn’t really want. Some people’s goal is to be happy and make more money. Well here’s a glass of wine and $1. By drinking a glass of wine, you’ll be happy and by having a $1 you’ll make more money. See what I mean? Be crystal clear with what you want and you’ll attract it into your life.
7. No one does it alone.
Brian Tracy talks about all the help he received prior to crossing the Saraha desert. He received generous funds from relatives and friends. He received help and advice from locals. He received help from others to cross the Sahara desert. At the end, he realised that no one does it alone. You achieve the success because someone helped you along the way. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s a sign of courage.
Brian Tracy will always be my mentor for he’s truly changed my life for the better. He’s influenced millions of lives and will live on forever. His wisdom, teaching and books will forever be cherished and change the world for many years to come.
Always remember that success is a journey and no one does it alone. We can all use a little help from time to time.
