The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho Book Review : A Journey Towards Your Dreams

I finally just finished reading Paolo Coelho’s famous book “The Alchemist”. All I can say is wow. I’ve seen this book many times in the bookstore and also heard great things about it. I’ve kept it in my “read later” pile and finally had a chance to read the entire book in one sitting tonight. Will Smith also credited Paolo’s Coelho’s book “The Alchemist” which helped him greatly in pursuing his dream of being a famous actor.

I must admit, it’s quite a coincidence to read this book during this time for last week I handed in my resignation from my 6 figure management position to pursue writing and my online business. I guess this is god’s way in comforting me that I’ve made the right decision. To quit a high salary career to go into an industry which pays you pennies, takes a lot of courage to say the least. However it was a decision based purely from the heart and I know that despite the outcome, I won’t live with any regret.

The Alchemist begins the story of a young boy named Santiago who has recurring dreams of finding lost treasure. He then goes onto to seek the advice of people and eventually comes across an old man who later finds out is a king. This king gives the young boy great wisdom and imparts his knowledge in his quest to seek the treasure in Egypt.

The story then continues on where he encounters omens, people, circumstances and obstacles that he comes across during his adventure to Egypt in search for his treasure.

I won’t give away the entire story for you’ll enjoy it much more from Paolo himself, I suck at story telling. All I can say is that this book is righteous in being known for one of the most inspirational books ever published. If you’re ever sitting on the sidelines and not sure of whether you should go after your dreams, read this book.

Here are my top key take aways from the Alchemist.

Pursue Your Dreams.

We spend so much time working just to pay the bills. Despite whether we are miserable in our jobs, we stay there just to make sure our bills are covered. Before you know it, a year as passed, then another then 10 years. Not only time passes by really quickly, your personality also changes too. It takes about 30 days for a habit to ensue and if you’re miserable in your job for a few months, then you’re embedding a miserable habit which will affect other areas of your life. A miserable job can change you and if you stay long enough, you will put your dreams aside and let it go.

It’s important to pursue your dreams for you’ll live with no regrets. Some people like it keep it a dream while others actively pursue it. Be the later.

The Universe Will Conspire To Help You.

This is a common phrase used throughout the book. As we read through the Alchemist, the adventure that unfolds is truly entertaining and memorable. As a result, you can clearly see the message that once you pursue what it is that you love, the universe will conspire to help you achieve it. Have you ever noticed that with your life where you set on a journey, unknown of the outcome but along the way, you met people, circumstances and situations that help you? I’ve seen this in my own life where I’ve tried so hard going after something and all of a sudden, I meet someone, receive a phone call or something happens that changes everything. It really is true, set your heart on a destination and unseen forces will come to your aid.

Follow your heart.

Keep your heart open and let it tell you what you love to do. Even if it doesn’t make any sense, your heart tends to know what you ought to do.

Watch for Omens.

When Santiago spoken with the king, they spoke of Omens. In life we come across many circumstances and situations are omens. These omens help us signify whether what we are doing is right and that is all the confidence we need to know a higher power is telling us we are on the right path. Keep an eye out for omens in life for this will ensure we are following our hearts desire.

Conclusion

It’s easy to get lost in life. We follow one path, the path of security and we tend to forget our dreams which would mean we take a riskier path. We all fear the unknown and it takes tremendous courage to pursue your dreams. To help fuel the furnace of courage to achieve your dreams, read Paolo Coelho’s book “The Alchemist”.
